Basketball Recap: New Hampstead Phoenix vs. Wayne County Yellow Jackets
New Hampstead was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They were four points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 64-60 heartbreaker at the hands of the Wayne County Yellow Jackets. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Phoenix came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 164th, while the Yellow Jackets are ranked 380th).
Leading Wayne County to victory were Dwayne Smith and Dawsyn Sikes. Smith went 9 of 15 en route to 29 points in addition to seven boards and three steals, while Sikes dropped a double-double on 12 points and 13 rebounds. Those 12 points gave Sikes a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Gavin Hilton, who posted nine points.
New Hampstead now has a losing record at 12-13. As for Wayne County, their win ended a six-game drought on the road and puts them at 6-16.
