The Jeannette Jayhawks and the California Trojans squared off in some playoff action on Friday, but sadly the Jeannette Jayhawks had to settle for second. Jeannette was beaten by California 44-6. Jeannette was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 28-0.
When it comes to explaining why Jeannette lost, one person who can't be blamed is Noah Sanders. Despite the final result, he picked up 107 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Leading California to victory were Jake Layhue and Spencer Petrucci. Layhue rushed for 145 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 8.5 yards per carry, while Petrucci rushed for 189 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 9.0 yards per carry. Petrucci has been hot recently, having posted 100 or more rushing yards the last six times he's played.
Another reason for the win was California's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for seven sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Malachi Peak and Fred Sherman who racked up five sacks between them.
This is the second loss in a row for Jeannette and nudges their season record down to 7-4. As for California, they have yet to lose a matchup at home this season, leaving them with a 10-2 record.
Jeannette does not have any more games scheduled as of now. California will head out on the road to face off against Bishop Canevin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Bishop Canevin is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune.
