It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Berwyn/Cicero Morton ultimately got the result they hoped for on Saturday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Proviso West Panthers 3-2. The victory continues a trend for the Mustangs in their matchups with the Panthers: they've now won seven in a row.

Xavier Valdez spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on six hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Berwyn/Cicero Morton's win was truly a team effort as three different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Anthony Rodriguez, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run. That's the most hits Rodriguez has posted since back in March. Another was Johangel Castrillo, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Berwyn/Cicero Morton's record is now 5-17. As for Proviso West, they have been struggling recently as they've lost nine of their last ten games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-11 record this season.

Berwyn/Cicero Morton and Proviso West could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Illinois Rankings. The Mustangs (ranked 419th) will meet Hinsdale Central (ranked 151st) at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Proviso West will face off against Lyons at 4:30 p.m. on Monday with a big rank disadvantage (384 vs. 44).
