Baseball Recap: Gunnison Comes Up Short

Gunnison extended their losing streak to five on Saturday, dropping them down to 2-9. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-3 heartbreaker at the hands of the Basalt Longhorns. If the Cowboys were looking for revenge after losing 15-14 to the Longhorns when the teams met back in April of 2025, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Jorge Perez was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run.

As for Basalt, they now have a winning record of 5-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory they have posted since April 16, 2025.

On Basalt's side, Karson Schneider and Chris Hays made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Schneider pitched six innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits. Meanwhile, Hays pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. At the plate, Schneider went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI, while Hays went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. That double marked the first that Schneider has hit this season.

In other batting news, Elliott Melnick was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Basalt beat Gunnison by a score of 10-6 later that day.
