Football Recap: Winfield Vikings vs. Wellington Crusaders

Winfield had lost three straight at home, but on Friday they dropped down to 1-5 to make it four. They took a 46-28 bruising from the Wellington Crusaders. The Vikings were not able to make up for their loss to the Crusaders from their previous meeting back in October of 2024.

Kellen Gibson and Eli Tagg certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Gibson threw for 204 yards and three touchdowns on only 16 passes, while Tagg picked up 175 receiving yards and three scores. Tagg really caught the secondary sleeping when he pulled down a catch that went for 80 yards.

As for Wellington, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 5-1. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 34.5 points over those games.

Jalik Armstrong was his usual excellent self, rushing for 203 yards and four TDs while picking up 11.9 yards per carry, and also picking up 44 receiving yards. Those four rushing touchdowns gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Colton Elmore, who threw for 212 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Coming up, Winfield will challenge Buhler at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Wellington, they will face off against Rose Hill on Friday. The Crusaders will need to watch out since the Rockets have now posted at least 31 points in their last three games.
