Preview: Nokomis Redskins vs. Greenfield/Northwestern Tigers
The Nokomis Redskins will head out on the road to face off against the Greenfield/Northwestern Tigers at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the pair will really light up the scoreboard.
Nokomis fell on hard times earlier this season, but after back-to-back wins it seems like their luck might finally be changing. They strolled past Sangamon Valley/Tri-City with points to spare on Friday, taking the game 41-23.
Nokomis found their leader in underclassman Nolan Herpstreith, who rushed for 350 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 12.1 yards per carry. Herpstreith is on a roll when it comes to rushing yards, as he's now rushed for 100 or more in the last six games he's played. Daryl Evans was in the mix as well, providing Nokomis with three touchdowns.
Another reason for the win was Nokomis' imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for eight sacks. Leading the way was Caleb Bauer and his three sacks.
Meanwhile, Greenfield/Northwestern put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They blew past Triopia/Meredosia-Chambersburg/Virginia, posting a 54-6 victory on the road. The result was nothing new for Greenfield/Northwestern, who have now won seven matches by 28 points or more so far this season.
Kohen Vetter was his usual excellent self, rushing for 111 yards and two touchdowns on only nine carries, while also picking up 65 receiving yards. Dylan Pembrook was another key contributor, throwing for 196 yards and three touchdowns on only ten passes.
Nokomis now has a winning record of 5-4. As for Greenfield/Northwestern, their victory was their ninth straight on the road, which bumped their overall record up to 9-0.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Saturday's matchup: Nokomis has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 324 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Greenfield/Northwestern struggles in that department as they've been averaging 208.9 per game. It's looking like Saturday's game might have some serious battles in the trenches.
