High school basketball: Mikey Williams, Lake Norman Christian to play in revamped City of Palms Classic

Mikey Williams and Lake Norman Christian (Davidson, N.C.) headline the newest additions to the 2020 City of Palms Classic, according to a report from the Fort Myers News-Press. Tournament director Donnie Wilkie quickly found six replacements for one of the marquee high school basketball tournaments after coronavirus and state obligations forced some teams from the venerable event.

Williams was recently ranked as the No. 2 recruit in the Class of 2023, according to 247Sports. The 2019 MaxPreps Freshman of the Year averaged 29.9 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists per contest.

Bartow (Fla.), Brentwood Academy (Brentwood, Tenn.), Calvary Christian Academy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), Riverview Sarasota (Sarasota, Fla.), Wasatch Academy (Mt. Pleasant, Utah) and Lake Norman Christian replace Blanche Ely (Pompano Beach, Fla.), Fenwick (Oak Park, Ill.), Fern Creek, (Louisville, Ky.), Kell (Marietta, Ga.), Northeast (Oakland Park, Fla.) and St. John's (Washington D.C.) in the 16-team field.

The new teams also join a field that includes reigning MaxPreps national champion Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) as well as Top 20 finisher IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.).

In addition to Williams, other Top 50 recruits now in the City of Palms field include Skyy Clark of Brentwood Academy, Kentucky pledge Nolan Hickman and Richard Isaacs of Wasatch Academy, Gregg Glenn of Calvary Christian and Florida State commit Bryce McGowens of Legacy Early College.

The final two programs of the Signature Series also were announced Friday as Legacy Early College (Greenville, S.C.) and AZ Compass Prep (Chandler, Ariz.) join West Oaks Academy (Orlando, Fla.) and Westtown (West Chester, Pa.) in a loaded four-team field.

The event is scheduled for Dec. 18-23 at Suncoast Credit Union Arena at Florida SouthWestern State College in Fort Myers.
