Softball Preview: Waggener Wildcats vs. Sacred Heart Valkyries

Waggener is 0-6 against Sacred Heart since April of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Waggener Wildcats are on the road again to play the Sacred Heart Valkyries at 5:00 p.m.

Waggener's hitters might be in the hot seat on Wednesday considering what happened against Presentation on Monday. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 15-0 to the Toppers, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior.

Meanwhile, in what's become a running theme this season, Sacred Heart gave their fans yet another huge victory on Tuesday. They blew past Spencer County 12-2. Winning may never get old, but Sacred Heart sure is getting used to it with their third in a row.

Sadie Hayes made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching five innings while giving up just two earned runs off six hits. Hayes has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't pitched less than five innings in three consecutive pitching appearances. Hayes was even better at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBI, and two runs.

In other batting news, Isabella Boyd and Hadley Dierking did most of the damage at the plate: Boyd went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and a triple, while Dierking scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Brigid McConville, who scored two runs while going 1-for-2.

Waggener's defeat dropped their record down to 3-3. As for Sacred Heart, they have been performing well recently as they've won 11 of their last 13 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 17-10-1 record this season.

Waggener might still be hurting after the 15-0 loss they got from Sacred Heart in their previous matchup back in May of 2018. Thankfully for Waggener, Audrey Lentz (who struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk)) won't be suiting up this time.
