Softball Game Preview: St. Joseph Notre Dame Pilots vs. University Red Devils

The St. Joseph Notre Dame Pilots will head out on the road to challenge the University Red Devils at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. St. Joseph Notre Dame is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.9 runs per game this season.

University will square off against a team with plenty of momentum: St. Joseph Notre Dame extended their winning streak to three on Thursday. Everything went the Pilots' way against Lick-Wilmerding as they made off with a 19-1 victory. The result was nothing new for the Pilots, who have now won ten matchups by ten runs or more so far this season.

Cassandra Sanchez was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out 13 batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit (and only one walk). She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in nine consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with four RBI and one run.

In other batting news, Reagan Bowman was incredible, firing off two home runs, eight RBI, and four runs while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances. Those eight RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Safah Hashemi, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with four runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Meanwhile, University suffered their closest loss since April 29, 2024 on Friday. They fell just short of Head-Royce by a score of 13-11. The Red Devils have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

St. Joseph Notre Dame's win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-5. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for University, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-12.

St. Joseph Notre Dame took their win against University in their previous meeting last Thursday by a conclusive 20-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Pilots since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
