Softball Game Preview: Memorial Mavericks vs. Lubbock-Cooper Pirates

For the second straight game, Memorial will face off against Lubbock-Cooper. The Mavericks will square off against the Pirates at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Memorial has given up an average of 6.5 runs per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Memorial heads in on the heels of a playoff match on Thursday. They came up short against Lubbock-Cooper, falling 11-1. That's two games in a row now that the Mavericks have lost by exactly ten runs.

For Lubbock-Cooper's part, Brooklyn Ray spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on eight hits and racked up 14 Ks. With that strong performance, Ray is now averaging an impressive 5.2 strikeouts per game.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Addison Luna, who went 3-for-5 with three runs, one triple, and one double. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of McKanna Garcia, who went 2-for-5 with three RBI, one triple, and one run.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Lubbock-Cooper kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least ten hits in ten consecutive games.

Lubbock-Cooper has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 17 of their last 18 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 25-5 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.3 runs over those games. As for Memorial, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 13-20.
