Softball Recap: River Takes a Loss

River was the 7-5 winner over Monroe Central when they last played one another on April 14th, but their luck changed this time around. The Pilots fell just short of the Seminoles by a score of 3-2 on Wednesday. That's two games in a row now that the Pilots have lost by just one run.

Ava Wohnhas spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned runs on 12 hits and racked up 12 Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Mallarie Maddy was cooking despite her team's loss, going 1-for-2 with one home run. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one home run the last three times she's played.

This is the second loss in a row for River and nudges their season record down to 10-12. Even worse, they were so close both times: the defeats came by an average of only one runs. As for Monroe Central, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-10 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. River will square off against Marietta at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Tigers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed eight runs per game on average), something the Pilots will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Monroe Central, they will face off against Beallsville at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Blue Devils have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 12.42 runs per game on average), something the Seminoles will no doubt try to take advantage of.
