Recap: Montwood Rams vs. Coronado Thunderbirds
If The Montwood Rams were feeling good off their 41-21 takedown of the El Dorado Aztecs last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Montwood took a 26-21 hit to the loss column at the hands of Coronado. Montwood lost against Coronado in their previous head to head back in November of 2022, too, but the margin this time around was much wider than the 41-35 score last time.
Despite the loss, Montwood still got an impressive performance from Gio Varela, who picked up 146 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Varela hasn't dropped below 100 receiving yards for three straight games.
Leading Coronado to victory were Thomas Murray and Ben Wilson. Murray rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns, while Wilson rushed for 100 yards.
On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Coronado's defense and their four sacks. Montwood's QB won't forget Jaeden Hickson anytime soon given Hickson sacked him three times.
Montwood has not been sharp recently, as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-5 record this season. As for Coronado, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 5-5.
Montwood will head out on the road to face off against Midland Legacy at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Midland Legacy knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past nine matches -- so hopefully Montwood likes a good challenge. Coronado does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
