Marquette Catholic has gone 9-1 against Metro-East Lutheran recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. The Explorers will head out on the road to square off against the Knights at 4:30 p.m. Marquette Catholic is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.5 runs per game this season.
Marquette Catholic took a eight-run loss the last time they faced off against East Alton-Wood River, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Explorers skirted past the Oilers 5-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Explorers have posted against the Oilers since April 24, 2017.
Kenna Lievers spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on nine hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 14 consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Allie Weiner was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and one double. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season. Kennedy Eveans was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Metro-East Lutheran). They put the hurt on Althoff Catholic with a sharp 18-1 victory on Monday. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest win of the season.
Taylor Weber made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out ten over four innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in May of 2024. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and two doubles.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Audrey Elmer, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs. That's the most runs she has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Thea Ball, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs and two RBI.
Metro-East Lutheran always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .676. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
The victory made it two in a row for Marquette Catholic and bumps their season record up to 5-10. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 6 runs in those games. As for Metro-East Lutheran, their victory ended a five-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 3-6.
Metro-East Lutheran's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Marquette Catholic hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .332. It's a different story for Metro-East Lutheran, though, as they've only averaged .247. Will they be able to contain Marquette Catholic's hitters?
