Week 7 Small-School Player of the Week
Cole Swayze, Purcell – Remember the name. Purcell is known for some of the best pizza available in Oklahoma at Jo’s, but Swayze may give others a reason to visit the town south of Norman for the next three years. Swayze – just a freshman – scored on touchdown runs of 53 and 44 yards in the first quarter as the Dragons took a commanding 13-0 lead.
In the second quarter after Bethany closed the gap to 13-10, the 6-foot-2, 170-pound signal caller broke free on an 80-yard scamper. When the dust settled in the battle that could eventually decide the championship in District 3A-2, Swayze finished with 244 yards rushing and three huge touchdowns for the Dragons.
Purcell – ranked seventh in Class 3A – has won seven straight games after dropping the season-opener to Lindsay, 38-34. Swayze has had a huge hand in the resurgence, rushing for 1,020 yards and 12 touchdowns while averaging 10.3 yards per carry. The Dragons don’t throw it much, but Swayze has six touchdown strikes on the season.
Honorable Mention
Justin Burns, Eufaula – The Ironheads moved to 7-1 on the season with a 32-6 win over Okemah. Burns caught five passes from Ethan Sharp for 148 yards and three touchdowns for Eufaula.
Chris Carr, Checotah – Carr led unbeaten Checotah to a 41-0 victory over Roland. Carr rushed for 182 yards and four touchdowns in the victory. Carr’s scoring efforts came from 1, 48, 15, and 26 yards in the rout.
Eric Gengnagel, Elgin – In a 30-6 victory over previous Class 3A No. 7 Newcastle, Gengnagel rushed for 225 yards and three touchdowns. Trailing 6-3 early on, Gengnagel broke free on an 85-yard touchdown run and later added runs of 6 and 44 yards for the Owls.
Chris Heath, Chelsea – In a 42-0 victory over Caney Valley, Heath rushed for 173 yards and three touchdowns. Heath made an impact on defense in the shutout, posting 16 tackles and forcing two fumbles as the Dragons picked up their second win of the season.
Matt Luetjen, Locust Grove – Despite a 50-27 loss to Jay, Luetjen continued his stellar play this season. Luetjen rushed for 192 yards and three touchdowns and added 90 passing yards. On defense, Luetjen recorded 20 tackles and two forced fumbles in a valiant losing effort.
Darren Madden, Washington – Madden completed 8-of-9 passes for 162 yards and three touchdowns in a 48-7 victory over Comanche. Justin Noel caught touchdown passes of 27 and 57 yards from Madden in the first quarter. Madden also added a 4-yard touchdown run for the Warriors.
Prince McJunkins, Wagoner – The sophomore quarterback led the Bulldogs to a 48-0 halftime lead in a 55-0 pounding of Tulsa Webster. McJunkins threw for 188 yards and two scores and added two more on the ground all in the first half in the rout.
Joey Rogers, Metro Christian – Rogers, the leading 11-man passer in Oklahoma, had another outstanding aerial effort in a 34-6 victory over Bristow. Rogers completed 33-of-47 passes for 445 yards and three touchdowns as Metro Christian rebounded from last week’s loss to Checotah.
Dylan Taylor, Vian – Vian moved to 6-2 and 4-1 on the season with a 34-0 victory over Westville. Taylor rushed for 304 yards and four touchdowns on 17 carries in the win. Taylor’s scoring runs covered 80, 79, 10, and 67 yards of distance.
Kent Warren, Lincoln Christian – In a 42-6 victory over Pawhuska, Warren threw for 345 yards and five touchdowns. Warren hit Roman Wilson twice for scores of 45 and 55 yards in the victory.
Week 7 Storylines
Morrison Keeps Winning
Forget about the struggles Morrison was allegedly slated to suffer in its move from eight-man kings to 11-man football. Despite participating in the rigors of District A-7 with Tonkawa, Woodland, Hominy, and Pawnee, the Wildcats stand alone in first place with two games to go following a 20-12 win over previously-unbeaten Tonkawa.
Morrison claimed its 47th straight victory in what the town of just over 600 residents said was the biggest game in its history. Morrison – 13-time state champions in eight-man – has steamrolled to 349 points in its 8-0 start this season.
Quarterback Shawn Walls carried the Wildcats on his back in the victory, rushing for three touchdowns. Walls scored on runs of 54, 24, and 36 yards.
Morrison has another enticing encounter this Friday as it travels to No. 4 Woodland. Woodland’s two losses this season were by a total of eight points to No. 1 Okeene and Tonkawa.
Copan Downs Porter in Eight-Man
In a battle of unbeatens in eight-man, Copan reeled off 26 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to down Porter, 52-36.
Porter was ahead 36-26 with 10:46 remaining when Copan’s Tyler Shull brought his team back. Shull scored two touchdowns in the come-from-behind triumph, including a 26-yard go-ahead scamper with 4:18 remaining to give the Hornets a 38-36 lead. Shull later added a 57-yard touchdown with less than a minute remaining, his fourth score of the game.
Shull finished with 188 yards on 19 carries for Copan (8-0), ranked No. 4 in Scott Hansen’s Oklahoma Eight-Man Super 10.
Porter trailed 26-14 in the third quarter making a rally of its own, claiming its 10-point advantage when Austin Taber returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown with 10:46 remaining in the fourth quarter. Porter (7-1) fell two spots to No. 6 this week in the top ten.
