Volleyball Recap: Winnetonka Griffins vs. Excelsior Springs Tigers
Winnetonka was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their sixth straight defeat. They lost 3-0 to the Excelsior Springs Tigers. The Griffins were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Tigers apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in October of 2024.
Winnetonka was held off the scoreboard, but that almost wasn't the case: they kept the second set very close. The match finished with set scores of 25-7, 25-23, 25-12.
Layla Maxwell paced Winnetonka's offense, picking up five kills. Maxwell got some help from Shayla Nguyen and her 71 assists. Finally, Nguyen was also a dominant defender, finishing with a team-high two blocks.
Excelsior Springs can attribute much of their success to Kendalyn Jones, who had six digs and two aces. Maddie Breshears also deserves some recognition as she had her first kills of the season.
Winnetonka's defeat dropped their record down to 6-8-1. As for Excelsior Springs, their victory bumped their record up to 4-11-1.
Coming up, Winnetonka will square off against Raytown South at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Excelsior Springs, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 3-0 win against Grandview on the 24th.
