Basketball Recap: Alamosa Piles Up the Points Against Montezuma-Cortez

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Alamosa). They breezed by the Montezuma-Cortez Panthers to the tune of 64-35 on Saturday. Given the Mean Moose's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 71st, while the Panthers are ranked 229th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Alamosa was led to victory by Aubrey Rothermich and Morgan Ortega. Rothermich went 7 of 12 en route to 16 points and four steals, while Ortega went 6 for 10 on her way to 17 points and eight assists. Jaelin Garcia was another key player, putting up nine points and five boards.

They weren't the only one working in the assists department: Alamosa was working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Montezuma-Cortez only racked up six assists.

When it comes to explaining why Montezuma-Cortez lost, don't look at Shaylynn Bia. Despite the final result, she posted ten points.

The win made it two in a row for Alamosa and bumps their season record up to 8-3. As for Montezuma-Cortez, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-7.

Alamosa will take on Pagosa Springs at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Alamosa has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. Montezuma-Cortez has already played their next game, a 49-25 defeat against Montrose on the 21st.
