Preview: Velma Jackson Falcons vs. Wingfield Falcons
Velma Jackson is 3-0 against Wingfield since November of 2019, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Tuesday. The Velma Jackson Falcons will be home for the holidays to greet the Wingfield Falcons at 7:30 p.m. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.
On Friday, Velma Jackson ended up a good deal behind Leake County and lost 65-51.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the most dominant came from Cameron Tate, who scored 22 points along with five rebounds. Joel Fleming was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with six rebounds.
Even though they lost, Velma Jackson were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, this season hasn't been kind to Wingfield, who are still winless after their tenth matchup. They suffered a tough 73-47 defeat at the hands of Brookhaven on Thursday. Wingfield was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 40-19.
Wingfield's loss came about despite a quality game from Martavius Bennett, who dropped a double-double on 22 points and 17 rebounds. That's the first time this season that Bennett scored 15 or more points.
Velma Jackson's loss dropped their record down to 4-7. As for Wingfield, they bumped their record down to 0-10 with that defeat, which was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Velma Jackson have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 19.2 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Wingfield, though, as they've been averaging only 17.6 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Velma Jackson was able to grind out a solid win over Wingfield when the teams last played back in December of 2022, winning 63-56. Will Velma Jackson repeat their success, or does Wingfield have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
