The Cherryville Ironmen will head out to challenge the East Gaston Warriors at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Cherryville is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.4 runs per game this season.
Cherryville lost 11-1 to Kings Mountain on Wednesday. The loss continues a trend for the Ironmen in their meetings with the Mountaineers: they've now lost five in a row.
Alexis McSwain made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-2 with one home run.
Meanwhile, East Gaston waltzed into their game on Tuesday with four straight wins... but they left with five. Everything went their way against the Ironmen as they made off with a 13-3 victory. The game was the first time the Warriors have beaten the Ironmen on their field since May 4, 2022.
Madi Perrigo made a splash no matter where she played. She pitched five innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. Perrigo was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.
In other batting news, Lexi Wheeler was incredible, scoring four runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. She has been hot recently, having also posted three or more RBI the last three times she's played. Carson Summey was another key player, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and one run.
East Gaston was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .452. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .333 or higher in six consecutive matchups.
East Gaston's win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 8-1. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 18.8 runs over those games. As for Cherryville, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-4.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Friday. Cherryville hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.4 home runs per game. However, it's not like East Gaston struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.4 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Cherryville might still be hurting after the 13-3 loss they got from East Gaston in their previous matchup on Tuesday. Can Cherryville avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
