Basketball Recap: Bastrop Comes Up Short

Bastrop lost against Wimberley back in December of 2023, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Bastrop Bears fell 67-55 to the Wimberley Texans. While losing is never fun, the Bears can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 903rd, while the Texans are ranked 175th).

Wimberley's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Paul Gumbert-Mendoza, who went 8 of 20 on his way to 19 points along with eight rebounds and six assists. The dominant performance also gave Gumbert-Mendoza a new career-high in blocks (five). Gavin Olmer was another key player, dropping a double-double on 11 points and 13 boards.

This is the second loss in a row for Bastrop and nudges their season record down to 6-7. As for Wimberley, the victory (which was their ninth in a row) raised their record to 9-3.

Bastrop will host Canyon Lake at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Bastrop's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last three contests. As for Wimberley, they will be taking part in a tournament against Glen Rose at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both teams are headed into the matchup with plenty of momentum (Glen Rose has won five straight at home, while Wimberley won three straight on the road), something that'll have to change.
