Baseball Game Preview: Miller School of Albemarle Mavericks vs. Norfolk Academy Bulldogs

Miller School of Albemarle is a perfect 4-0 against Norfolk Academy since March of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Mavericks will square off against the Bulldogs at 2:00 p.m. Miller School of Albemarle is coming into the contest hot, having won their last seven games.

Miller School of Albemarle's pitching crew heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Thursday. They were the clear victors by a 7-0 margin over The Covenant. Considering the Mavericks have won eight matches by more than six runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

The result came thanks to Caleb Crawford's shutout, as he gave up just three hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.

At the plate, Mandela Browman was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-4. That's the most hits he has posted over his last eight contests. The team also got some help courtesy of Will Tomlinson, who scored two runs while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.

Miller School of Albemarle hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their strikeout total in four consecutive games.

For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Norfolk Academy and Cape Henry Collegiate meet (three straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Thursday. The Bulldogs fell 5-2 to the Dolphins.

Miller School of Albemarle's victory was their 22nd straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 15-5. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.5 runs over those games. As for Norfolk Academy, their loss dropped their record down to 9-8.

Miller School of Albemarle was able to grind out a solid victory over Norfolk Academy in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, winning 4-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mavericks since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
