Softball Recap: West Covina Takes a Loss

West Covina fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Monrovia on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Wildcats by a score of 14-13. If the Bulldogs were looking for revenge after losing 5-1 to the Wildcats when the teams met back in March of 2023, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Liliana Lopez led a balanced group of hitters, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in five of her six plate appearances. Jaelene Avalos also deserves some recognition as she scored her first run of the season.

Even though they lost, West Covina was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .385. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .304 or higher in three consecutive contests.

West Covina has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-7-1 record this season. The victory made it two in a row for Monrovia and bumps their season record up to 4-9-1.

West Covina and Monrovia could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. West Covina (ranked 529th) will meet Northview (ranked 210th) at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Monrovia will square off against Duarte at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday down 509 places (717 vs. 208).
