V Section III recap October 29, 2013
Morenci extended the longest winning streak in V Section III this week by beating Bisbee, 28-7. The victory was the fifth in a row for the Wildcats.
Tombstone took down Tanque Verde 49-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Dontae Otey ran for 216 yards during the win.
Otey was a force in the backfield as the Yellow Jackets defeated the Hawks.
Heath Motes made the biggest impact on defense this week as Thatcher lost to Joy Christian. The 5-foot-11 junior forced 1 fumble and recorded 1 fumble.
Otey provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Tombstone topped Tanque Verde.
Raymond Rodriguez was the best receiver in the league this week as Willcox fell to Benson. Rodriguez racked up 8 receptions for 156 yards. Gregory Villareal helped Willcox's passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 26 yards.
On the heels of Jake Whitfield and Villareal, the Cowboys have had great success on offense. Whitfield leads the league in passing with 1,170 yards, while Villareal has rushed for 1,187 yards this season. The Pumas' Spencer Schuller leads the league in receiving yards with 496 on 26 catches.
The Eagles' Motes needs only 18 yards against Morenci next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season. Motes has rushed for 982 yards on 128 carries so far this year.
Two of the top teams in the league will go toe-to-toe this week when Thatcher takes on Frank Ogas' team. Dave Jefferies' team's offense has recorded 336 points this season, making them No. 1 in the league, while the Wildcats have permitted only 123 on the year.
A big matchup in V Section III this week will be when Morenci takes on the Eagles. As it stands, the Wildcats are in third, while Thatcher is in first.
