Preview: Pojoaque Valley Elks/Elkettes vs. Espanola Valley Sundevils
Pojoaque Valley is 1-9 against Espanola Valley since February of 2020 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. The Pojoaque Valley Elks/Elkettes will be playing at home against the Espanola Valley Sundevils at 7:00 p.m. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are closely ranked in New Mexico (Pojoaque Valley is ranked 56th, while Espanola Valley is ranked 42nd).
After a string of four wins, Pojoaque Valley's good fortune finally ran out on Thursday. They took a 53-45 hit to the loss column at the hands of Los Alamos. Pojoaque Valley has not had much luck with Los Alamos recently, as the team's come up short the last five times they've met.
Despite the defeat, Pojoaque Valley saw an underclassman step up: Monique Arrietta scored 15 points along with five rebounds. It was the first time this season that Arrietta scored 15 or more points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jasmine Valdez, who scored seven points.
Meanwhile, Espanola Valley waltzed into their matchup on Thursday with two straight wins but they left with three. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past Taos 44-42.
Pojoaque Valley's defeat ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 11-11. As for Espanola Valley, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games, which provided a massive bump to their 13-9 record this season.
Pojoaque Valley strolled past Espanola Valley in their previous meeting back in January by a score of 36-20. Does Pojoaque Valley have another victory up their sleeve, or will Espanola Valley turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
