Softball Recap: Wharton Comes Up Short

Wharton came into this matchup off a tough six-run defeat last Thursday. This time they kept things ultra-competitive, but unfortunately the final result was the same. They fell just short of the Newsome Wolves by a score of 5-3 on Monday. The Wildcats' loss continues a trend for the team, making it six in a row.

Eliza Connell spent all 12 innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Wharton saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Khloe Gonzalez, who went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Skylah Stephens also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

Wharton's defeat dropped their record down to 2-6. As for Newsome, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-3 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Wharton will head out to challenge Strawberry Crest at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Newsome, they will head out on the road to square off against Sumner at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Sumner is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.2 runs per game this season.
