Basketball Recap: Alejandro (Alex) Flores' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Aurora Central over Thornton

It was a good run, but Aurora Central unfortunately witnessed the end of their three-game winning streak on Thursday. They took a 40-35 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Thornton Trojans. While Aurora Central didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating Thornton 7-0 in the first quarter.

Several Trojans players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Alejandro (Alex) Flores, who posted 15 points. Flores is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last six games he's played. Gabou (Ben) Camara was another key player, putting up four points in addition to ten boards and eight blocks.

Even though they lost, Aurora Central smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in six consecutive contests.

Clayton Jones continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Thornton, dropping a double-double on 19 points and 17 rebounds. That makes it 13 consecutive games in which Jones has scored at least a third of Thornton's points. Another player making a difference was Alex Sandovol, who put up nine points along with six boards and four steals.

Aurora Central's defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 7-8. As for Thornton, their victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-5.

Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Skyview the next time they take the court. Thornton will head out to face Skyview at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, while Aurora Central will head out to face them at 7:00 p.m. on January 30th.
