Basketball Recap: New Covenant Comes Up Short

After flying high against Grace Christian last Saturday, New Covenant came back down to earth. The New Covenant Gryphons were dealt a 58-14 defeat at the hands of the Miller School of Albemarle Mavericks on Thursday. If the Gryphons were looking for revenge after losing 45-16 to them when the teams met, then they'll just have to keep looking.

When it comes to explaining why New Covenant lost, don't look at Ellie Jacobs. Despite the final result, she posted six points and six boards. Jacobs is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last nine games she's played dating back to last season.

Leading Miller School of Albemarle to victory were Brooklyn Wells and Anna Smith. Wells went 6 of 10 on her way to 17 points, while Smith went 5 of 7 on her way to 10 points in addition to eight boards and four steals. Those 17 points gave Wells a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Parker Braxton, who put up nine points and three steals.

With the loss, New Covenant broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 5-3. As for Miller School of Albemarle, they pushed their record up to 7-2 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road.

New Covenant and Lynchburg HomeSchool will compete for holiday cheer at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Miller School of Albemarle, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next matchup, a 35-32 win against Varsity Opponent on the 13th.
