3A Metro - East recap Oct. 23, 2012
Elizabeth extended the longest winning streak in 3A Metro - East this week by beating Fort Morgan, 28-27. The win marks fifth in a row for the the Cardinals.
Vista PEAK Prep took down Skyview 62-41 last week, the largest margin of any game. Adam Puehler threw for 142 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 14 yards in the win.
DJ Ortiz was the best wideout in the league this week as the Bison beat the Wolverines. Ortiz racked up one reception for 52 yards. Noah Butler helped Vista PEAK Prep's passing attack out by catching one ball for 39 yards.
Dominque Brown was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 192 yards on 16 carries as Skyview defeated Skyview. Emillo Daigle also contributed to the rushing game with 33 yards on the ground.
Pat Rock's team's Puehler and Ortiz have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 3A Metro - East in both passing and receiving yards. Puehler has thrown for 1038 yards this season, while Ortiz, a 6-foot-3 receiver, has 33 catches for 435 yards. Englewood's Greg Pearson leads the league in rushing yards with 976.
The Pirates' Pearson is a mere 24 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Mustangs take on Weld Central. Fort Morgan is currently in first, while the Rebels are in third.
Elizabeth and the Mustangs played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Elizabeth eventually emerging with a 28-27 victory.
