Basketball Recap: Canutillo Eagles vs. Burges Mustangs
Canutillo lost against Burges on January 7th and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Canutillo Eagles took a blow against the Burges Mustangs, falling 60-31. While losing is never fun, the Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 718th, while the Mustangs are ranked 324th).

Mia Valenzuela and Keani Hargraves certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Valenzuela posted 12 points and three steals, while Hargraves put up four points and three steals. That's the most points Valenzuela has posted since back in December of 2024.
Danae Gonzalez was her usual excellent self, going 8 for 14 on her way to 19 points and six steals for Burges. The contest was Gonzalez's 11th in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Melanie Arriaga, who scored eight points and seven rebounds.
With the defeat, Canutillo broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 12-14. As for Burges, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 14 of their last 16 games, which provided a nice bump to their 18-10 record this season.
Canutillo wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 36-32 victory against Chapin on the 28th. As for Burges, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 63-17 win against Andress on the 28th.
