The Jay County Patriots will take on the Eastern Comets in a tournament on Saturday. Both teams are coming into the game red-hot, with Jay County sitting on three straight wins and Eastern on four.
Jay County's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Thursday. They put the hurt on Bluffton with a sharp 12-0 victory. The result was nothing new for the Patriots, who have now won nine contests by seven runs or more so far this season.
Zoe Mclaughlin was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Hallie Schwieterman, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Brenna Ruble, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
Jay County was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .433. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .433 or higher in three consecutive games.
Meanwhile, it was close, but on Wednesday Eastern sidestepped Delphi Community for a 5-3 win.
Paige Wesner spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three runs (all of which were unearned) on three hits.
At the plate, Emillia Andrews was incredible, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Elle Winger, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Jay County's record now sits at 10-2. As for Eastern, their record is now 8-9.
Eastern's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Jay County has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 12.7 hits per game. It's a different story for Eastern, though, as they've been averaging 9.2 hits. Given Jay County's sizable advantage in that area, the Comets will need to find a way to close that gap.
Jay County beat Eastern 11-7 in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Will the Patriots repeat their success, or do the Comets have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
