Baseball Recap: South El Monte Drops Highest Score of Season Against El Monte

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask South El Monte). They never let the El Monte Lions get on the board and left with a 13-0 victory on Wednesday. The win continues a trend for the Eagles in their matchups with the Lions: they've now won seven in a row.

Christian Ortega was a major factor no matter where he played. He kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 14 over six innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing two bases. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Emiliano Gonzalez and Armando Huizar did most of the damage at the plate: Gonzalez got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one home run, four RBI, and one double, while Huizar scored three runs and stole four bases while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. Those four RBI gave Gonzalez a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Xavier Cordova, who scored three runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-3.

South El Monte kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive contests.

South El Monte's record is now 8-4. As for El Monte, they are on a 26-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-8.

Coming up, South El Monte will take on Artesia at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for El Monte, they will face off against Arroyo at 3:15 p.m. on Friday.
