Monarch (Louisville, Colo.) saw its 28-point lead dwindle to seven, but still managed to hang on and upset
Vista Ridge (Colorado Springs, Colo.) 28-21 on Saturday.
The Coyotes were up 21-0 at the half after taking the lead on a touchdown run in the first quarter.
Both teams scored seven points in the third quarter, so the margin remained at 21 entering the fourth.
The loss came as a surprise for the Wolves, which entered the game ranked No. 14 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for Colorado, while Monarch was ranked No. 21.
Brayden Stewart made a difference for Vista Ridge. The senior quarterback threw three touchdowns. His performance brought his touchdown total to seven on the year.
Ethan Marks was the top performer for MHS. He ran for one touchdown. He has now scored 14 touchdowns on the season.
The loss comes after Vista Ridge defeated Canon City 41-7 last week.
