Basketball Game Preview: Staunton River Golden Eagles vs. Appomattox County Raiders

The Staunton River Golden Eagles will wrap up 2024 with a road trip to face off against the Appomattox County Raiders at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: both posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.

Last Thursday, Staunton River beat Liberty 63-56.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Appomattox County). They came out on top against Altavista by a score of 65-57 on Tuesday.

Appomattox County found their leader in sophomore Owen Chavis, who dropped a double-double on 28 points and 14 boards. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Chavis has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Cam Flythe, who posted 11 points.

Appomattox County was working as a unit and finished the game with 20 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Staunton River's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 5-3. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 67.7 points per game. As for Appomattox County, their win bumped their record up to 4-2.

Staunton River strolled past Appomattox County when the teams last played back in December of 2023 by a score of 58-40. The rematch might be a little tougher for Staunton River since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
