Basketball Recap: Florence Gophers vs. Veritas Prep Falcons
The Florence Gophers's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their third straight loss. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 49-48 to Veritas Prep. Florence found out winning isn't easy when you're outrebounded 21 to 8 on offense.
Loss or not, Florence got some senior leadership from Keylee Scarbrough and E.c. Turk-francis. Scarbrough scored 17 points along with eight rebounds and two steals, while Turk-francis. scored 13 points along with eight rebounds and two steals. Scarbrough hasn't dropped below two steals for five straight games. Aubrey Farmer was another key contributor, scoring six points along with five assists.
Leading Veritas Prep to victory were Mckenzie Perrault and Valeria Castaneda. Perrault dropped a double-double on 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Castaneda dropped a double-double on 20 points and 12 rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Castaneda has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Natalia Ortiz, who scored two points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Florence dropped their record down to 8-15 with that defeat, which was their fifth straight at home. As for Veritas Prep, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 11-6.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Florence will take on the Sabercats at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Hopefully San Tan Foothills focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 20 on Friday. As for Veritas Prep, they will be playing in front of their home fans against the Mustangs at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Rancho Solano Prep focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 17 on Saturday.
