Meanwhile, Steamboat Springs hadn't done well against Meeker recently (they were 0-4 in their previous four matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Wednesday. The Sailors narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Cowboys 5-4. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Sailors.
Wiley Cotter made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Steamboat Springs is 4-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 6-7 otherwise. Cotter was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one triple and one run.
In other batting news, Jonathan Nicoles and Achilles Cornwall did most of the damage at the plate: Nicoles went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases, one run, and one RBI, while Cornwall went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI. That's the most hits Cornwall has posted since back in March. Felix Lohne was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Steamboat Springs hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post two or more strikeouts.
Battle Mountain now has a losing record of 7-8. As for Steamboat Springs, their victory bumped their record up to 10-8.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Battle Mountain has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Steamboat Springs struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7.5 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Battle Mountain took their win against Steamboat Springs in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 12-2 score. Will the Huskies repeat their success, or do the Sailors have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
