Recap: Jay Royals vs. Poplar Springs Atomics
The Jay Royals have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won five games by 22 points or more this season. Couldn't have asked for a better start to 2024 than the 58-28 blowout they got on the road against Poplar Springs. Given Jay's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 64th, while Poplar Springs is ranked 528th), the result on Thursday wasn't entirely unexpected.
Jay was led to victory by Carleigh Baker and Aubreigh Nelson. Baker scored eight points along with five rebounds and four steals, while Nelson scored 12 points. Baker continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Hattie Locklin, who scored six points along with eight rebounds.
Jay's victory was their ninth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 13-1. They've been dominating during the contests in that stretch too, as they've won by an average of 24.22 points. As for Poplar Springs, they are on a seven-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-7.
Jay will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against Paxton at 5:30 p.m. on January 9th. Poplar Springs won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Ashford at 5:45 p.m. on January 5th.
