Basketball Recap: Mayfield Falls Despite Big Games from Madison Case and Kendyl Conyne

If Mayfield was riding high fresh off their 65-41 takedown of Mekeel Christian Academy last Wednesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Mayfield Panthers came up short against the Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville Wolves on Friday, falling 55-35. The Panthers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Wolves apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in February.

Despite the loss, Mayfield had strong showings from Kendyl Conyne, who posted six points and five rebounds, and Madison Case, who had three points along with nine rebounds and three steals. The dominant performance gave Case a new career-high in boards.

Even though they lost, Mayfield smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in three consecutive matches.

Mayfield's defeat dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 3-0.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. A feisty cat fight will be fought when the Mayfield Panthers challenge the Canajoharie Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Mayfield is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 56.3 points per game this season. Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville and Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons will compete for holiday cheer at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
