Softball Game Preview: El Capitan Vaqueros vs. Valhalla Norsemen

El Capitan is 1-7 against Valhalla since April of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Vaqueros will host the Norsemen at 4:00 p.m. El Capitan has given up an average of 6.7 runs per game this season, but Wednesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

El Capitan is headed into Wednesday's contest looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Monday. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 11-1 to Otay Ranch, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior.

El Capitan saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Gabrielle Garcia, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one RBI.

Meanwhile, Valhalla had just enough and edged out Grossmont 5-3 on Saturday. The victory continues a trend for the Norsemen in their matchups with the Foothillers: they've now won four in a row.

Devyn Mack spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up six Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 17 consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Liliana Moscoso, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Vanessa Moscoso, who got on base in two of her three plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.

El Capitan's defeat dropped their record down to 5-11. As for Valhalla, their win bumped their record up to 7-11.

El Capitan skirted past Valhalla 6-5 in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Will the Vaqueros repeat their success, or do the Norsemen have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
