Baseball Game Preview: Corning Cardinals vs. Gridley Bulldogs

For the second straight game, Corning will face off against Gridley. The Cardinals will take on the Bulldogs at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Corning has given up an average of 9.5 runs per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Corning lost 15-2 to Gridley on Tuesday. The loss continues a trend for the Cardinals in their meetings with the Bulldogs: they've now lost nine in a row.

For Gridley's part, Eli Punzo was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out eight over five innings pitched. Punzo was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of his four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.

In other batting news, Tanner Abbott was incredible, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and one triple. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Luis Murillo, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI.

Gridley was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .393. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .308 or higher in four consecutive games.

Gridley has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-8 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.5 runs on average over those games. As for Corning, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-13.
