Basketball Game Preview: Northumberland Indians vs. Mathews Blue Devils

Northumberland hasn't had much luck against Mathews recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Northumberland Indians will take on the Mathews Blue Devils at 7:00 p.m. Neither of those teams managed to put together many points in their previous contests, so the offenses might be a little more motivated than usual.

It's never fun to lose, and it's even less fun to lose 56-23, which was the final score in Northumberland's tilt against Westmoreland on Thursday. While losing is never fun, the Indians can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 317th, while the Eagles are ranked 148th).

Meanwhile, Mathews suffered their biggest loss since February 3, 2024 on Saturday. They were beaten by Gloucester 60-25. The Blue Devils have struggled against the Dukes recently, as the game was their third consecutive lost matchup.

Mathews' defeat dropped their record down to 5-12. As for Northumberland, they now have a losing record at 5-6.

Northumberland was able to grind out a solid win over Mathews in their previous matchup back in December of 2024, winning 34-26. The rematch might be a little tougher for Northumberland since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
