The percentage of high school draft picks actually went up in 2012 compared to 2011.

Archbishop McCarthy had four players drafted, the most of any high school team.

For a while during the second day of the Major League Baseball First Year Player Selection Draft, it looked like high school baseball players might become an endangered species.
With teams looking for easier signs due to the limited amount of signing bonus pool money allowed under the new collective bargaining agreement, college players were flying off the board while many high school players, including players ranked among the Top 100 in the country, were left to wonder if they would even be chosen in the draft.
However, a look at the numbers show that, percentage-wise, more high school players were chosen this year than in 2011. A total of 379 high school players (not counting Puerto Rico and Canada) were selected in the 40 rounds this year out of a total of 1,238 total selections. That means 30 percent of all players chosen were high school players.
In 2011, 448 high school players were chosen in the 50-round draft. With 1,530 overall players chosen, that works out to just 29 percent.
In fact, what appeared to be a lull in high school players selected on the second day of this year's draft was also a bit misleading. For the first 15 rounds, 32 percent of all players chosen were from high school. Over the final 25 rounds, only 29 percent were chosen.
California led the way among the 50 states with 80 selections, down just seven from last year despite 10 fewer rounds and nearly 300 fewer picks in this year's draft. Florida, after a strong first and second days, finished with 61, which is up four from last year. Texas finished with 43, also up from last year's total of 40.
Rounding out the Top 10 are Georgia with 23, Missouri and New York with 11 each and Alabama, Louisiana, North Carolina and Illinois with 10 apiece.
Alaska, Idaho, Maine, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming did not have any players chosen in the draft. Montana, which does not officially sanction baseball as a high school sport, had three players selected.
A total of 27 high schools had at least two players chosen in the draft. Two of those schools,
Olympia (Orlando, Fla.) and
Servite (Anaheim, Calif.) had three players, while
Archbishop McCarthy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) had four players chosen, including
Nick Travieso,
Ryan Castellanos,
Nick Basto and
Andre Martinez.
Only three Major League teams drafted 20 or more high school players, down from seven last year (due in part to the reduction in draft rounds). The New York Mets led the way with 23 while the Toronto Blue Jays chose 22 and the Philadelphia Phillies chose 20.
The Mets focused their draft on high school infielders, choosing seven that can play the middle infield, including their No. 1 overall pick
Gavin Cecchini of
Barbe (Lake Charles, La.).
For the second year in a row, the San Francisco Giants chose the fewest high school players, taking just five. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim also selected only five high school players.
