Football Recap: St. Patrick's Victory on Friday Extends Winning Streak to Nine

St. Patrick faced Montabella in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Shamrocks blew past the Mustangs 42-16. Considering the Shamrocks have won seven matchups by more than 25 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead St. Patrick to victory, but perhaps none more so than Brady Leonard, who rushed for 131 yards and one score on only 11 carries. The team also got some help courtesy of Hudson King, who rushed for 78 yards and one touchdown.

Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something St. Patrick proved: they limited Montabella to a paltry 2.1 yards per carry. The team can thank Aiden Mosser for the heroic effort on defense: he. St. Patrick didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 6.7.

St. Patrick didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off four passes before the game was over. Leonard led the group effort, picking up two of those interceptions all by himself. Mosser also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with 12. Charlie Thelen got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Montabella's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Austin Jensen, who picked up 130 receiving yards and one TD, and Gabriel Kauffman, who threw for 146 yards and one touchdown on only 11 passes. Jensen got the majority of those receiving yards when he pulled down a pass and took off for a gain of 87 yards.

The win keeps St. Patrick at an undefeated 9-0. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 42.8 points this season. As for Montabella, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 8-1.

St. Patrick and Montabella are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. The Shamrocks will be playing at home against Marion at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. St. Patrick will need to watch out since the Eagles have now posted at least 31 points in their last seven contests. As for Montabella, they will host Breckenridge at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
