The Varina Blue Devils are taking a road trip to take on the Monacan Chiefs at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Monacan will be up against a hot Varina team: the squad just extended their winning streak to three. The Blue Devils were the clear victors by a 21-7 margin over John Marshall on Tuesday.
Ta'Vion Tunstall was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Tunstall was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That home run was his first of the season.
In other batting news, Keith Brooks was a standout: he went a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Carter Sisk, who went 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Varina lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, while Monacan put up plenty of runs on Thursday, the same can't be said for Richmond High School for the Arts. The Chiefs were the clear victors by an 11-0 margin over the Bulldogs. That looming 11-0 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Chiefs yet this season.
Monacan is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 7-6-1 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.4 runs on average over those games. As for Varina, the victory got them back to even at 8-8.
Varina skirted past Monacan 4-3 in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Will the Blue Devils repeat their success, or do the Chiefs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
