Softball Recap: Springport Spartans vs. Lumen Christi Catholic Titans
Springport extended their losing streak to three on Saturday, dropping their season record down to 11-3 in the process. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-3 heartbreaker at the hands of the Lumen Christi Catholic Titans. The Spartans were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Titans apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in May of 2023.
As for Lumen Christi Catholic, the win was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 19-7. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.5 runs over those games.
For Lumen Christi Catholic's part, Bella Wrozek made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 13 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits (and only one walk). That's the most strikeouts Wrozek has posted over her last eight games. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles.
In other batting news, Alison Furnas was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played.
Springport and Lumen Christi Catholic should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Michigan Rankings. The Spartans (ranked 92nd) will meet Concord (ranked 527th) at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Lumen Christi Catholic will challenge Hillsdale at 4:00 p.m. on Monday with a big rank advantage (138 vs. 473).
