Basketball Recap: Bertie Comes Up Short

If Bertie was riding high fresh off their 55-15 takedown of North East Carolina Prep last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Bertie Falcons were outmatched by the Washington County Panthers and fell 66-30. While losing is never fun, the Falcons can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 499th, while the Panthers are ranked 240th).

Despite the defeat, Bertie saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Jasmine Taylor went 7 for 11 en route to 15 points. Armani Bridgett also deserves some recognition as she posted her first block of the season.

Leading Washington County to victory were Ke'Myia Young and Aaliyah Carter. Young dropped a double-double on 20 points and ten steals, while Carter went 9 of 16 on her way to 22 points in addition to seven steals and six boards. Those ten steals gave Young a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Ke'Nyia Young, who posted ten points along with seven rebounds and six steals.

Bertie's loss was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 3-9. As for Washington County, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-4.

Bertie is taking a road trip to square off against North East Carolina Prep at 6:00 p.m. on January 24th. As for Washington County, they will venture away from home to take on Martin County at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
