Iona Prep has gone 8-2 against Cardinal Hayes recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Gaels will square off against the Cardinals at 7:00 p.m. Iona Prep will be strutting in after a win while Cardinal Hayes will be coming in after a loss.
Last Saturday, everything came up roses for Iona Prep against Archbishop Stepinac as the squad secured a 49-21 victory. Considering the Gaels have won six contests by more than 23 points this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Iona Prep to victory, but perhaps none more so than Julian Guzman, who rushed for 86 yards and a pair of TDs, and also threw for 207 yards while completing 73.3% of his passes. Guzman showed off some serious burst, turning on the afterburners on one carry for 50 yards. Another pass catcher making a difference was Joe Wolf, who picked up 143 receiving yards and one touchdown.
Iona Prep's run defense was locked in: Archbishop Stepinac could only muster 3.4 yards per carry. The dominant display was nothing new: the Gaels have now limited their opponent to fewer and fewer yards per carry in three consecutive matchups.
Iona Prep didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Lamar Lewis and Willie Reeves. Reeves got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Cardinal Hayes wound up with the same score they had in their last game (40-28), but sadly the team found themselves on the wrong side of the score this time. While losing is never fun, they can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New York football rankings (they are ranked 71st, while the Friars are ranked 17th).
Iona Prep's win bumped their record up to 8-1. As for Cardinal Hayes, their defeat was their sixth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 2-8.
