Softball Game Preview: McCurdy Bobcats vs. Eunice Cardinals

A feisty cat fight will be fought as McCurdy Bobcats challenge Eunice Cardinals at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. McCurdy is coming into the matchup on a four-game losing streak.

McCurdy's tournament run continued when they took on Hot Springs on Saturday. The Bobcats fell just short of the Tigers by a score of 11-10.

Mariana Arambula and Cassandra Martinez stepped up to the plate in a big way. Arambula went 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one triple, while Martinez scored two runs and stole four bases while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. Karina Archuleta was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing four bases while going 1-for-3.

Meanwhile, Eunice was able to grind out a solid win over Mesilla Valley Christian School on Friday, taking the game 9-6.

Cheyenne Blevins spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and one unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up six Ks. Those six strikeouts set a new season-high mark for her.

On the hitting side, Halley Jones and Peyton Williams did most of the damage at the plate: Jones scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances, while Williams scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Elizabeth Gaytan, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one double.

Eunice kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in three consecutive contests.

McCurdy's loss dropped their record down to 1-6. As for Eunice, the victory got them back to even at 4-4.

Friday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. McCurdy hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .400. However, it's not like Eunice struggles in that department as they've averaged .371. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
