Softball Preview: Firth Cougars vs. Malad Dragons

Firth hasn't had much luck against Malad recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Cougars will welcome the Dragons at 4:00 p.m. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Firth is headed into the match having just posted their closest victory since May 7, 2024 on Friday. They won by a run and slipped past Declo 7-6.

Andrea Fielding was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-3. Another player making a difference was Mckenna Erickson, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one stolen base and one RBI.

Meanwhile, while Malad put up plenty of runs on Saturday, the same can't be said for North Fremont. The Dragons blew past the Huskies 20-0. The result was nothing new for the Dragons, who have now won nine games by seven runs or more so far this season.

Riglee Peterson made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI.

In other batting news, Malad got a massive performance out of Aubrey Shulz, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, three doubles, and two RBI. Those three doubles gave Shulz a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Bostyn Combs, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and one double.

Malad is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-2 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.4 runs on average over those games. As for Firth, their victory bumped their record up to 3-7.

The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. Firth has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.3 stolen bases per game.
