Basketball Recap: Corning Comes Up Short

Corning was the 65-62 winner over West Valley when they last played one another back in December of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. The Corning Cardinals came up short against the West Valley Eagles on Saturday, falling 65-39. The contest marked the Cardinals' lowest-scoring match so far this season.

Despite the loss, Corning still got an impressive performance from Jeff Mendros, who almost dropped a double-double on 19 points and nine rebounds. The dominant performance gave Mendros a new career-high in rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Ivan Jones, who posted two points and seven rebounds.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead West Valley to victory, but perhaps none more so than Zack Boemeke, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 12 boards. Another player making a difference was Jordan Heacock, who went 5 of 12 on his way to 15 points.

Corning's loss dropped their record down to 3-5. As for West Valley, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 6-3.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Corning and Anderson will compete for holiday cheer at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. West Valley will take on Wasilla in a holiday battle at at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday. One thing working in West Valley's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last four games.
