Softball Recap: Gorton Comes Up Short

Gorton extended their losing streak to eight on Monday, dropping them down to 0-8. They came up short against the Yonkers Montessori Academy Eagles, falling 18-0. If the Wolves were looking for revenge after losing 27-7 to the Eagles when the teams met back in May of 2021, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Yorvelis Fernandez made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went a perfect 2-for-2 with three stolen bases.

As for Yonkers Montessori Academy, the victory keeps them at an undefeated 5-0. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 8.0 runs this season.

On Yonkers Montessori Academy's side, Alyssa Calvello was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out 15 over five innings pitched. Calvello has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run any time she's pitched this season. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run, three stolen bases, and four runs.

In other batting news, Yonkers Montessori Academy let Stephanie Dice and Autumn McCauley run wild. Dice got on base in three of her four plate appearances with five stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI, while McCauley got on base in three of her four plate appearances with five stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Victoria Bonilla, who earned one RBI, two runs, and two stolen bases.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Gorton will head out to take on Lincoln at 4:00 p.m. on May 5. As for Yonkers Montessori Academy, they will venture away from home to challenge Haldane at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
