Volleyball Recap: Independence Blue Devils vs. Hoover Vikings
Independence unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-court advantage in their season opener. They took a 3-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Hoover Vikings on Tuesday. While the Blue Devils didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Vikings 25-19 in the first set.
Independence started the match hot and won the first set, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last three. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-16.
Haley Wilson paced Independence's offense, picking up 12 kills. Wilson really made an impact as she also led the team in assists with 14. Anna Jirmasek controlled things from the service line, finishing with three aces.
Hoover has started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it.
Looking ahead, Independence will welcome Richmond Heights at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The matchup will give the Blue Devils their first taste of in-conference action this season. As for Hoover, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 3-2 win against Villa Angela-St. Joseph on the 21st.
